Reach the Beach returns after a year off and we hope to see many of you on the start line. Just where that line will be hasn't been determined but it will start in either Selkirk or Beausejour. That will be decided within the next week. This will make the event about 6 - 8 kms longer so we can surely say that the race is bigger. We are also exploring a slightly different finishing route as the cost of lifeguards for THE SWAMP is prohibitive.
Riders will not require a license to take part in Reach the Beach. This is a mountain bike race but it is ideally suited to a strong road rider. We like to think of it as Manitoba's Paris Roubaix with the sand sections being our version of cobbles. Entries will be available on the MCA site or at the Portage Olympia Cycle store
That was one long hard day!

Before I raced the insanity they call XC8.Com, Beach 2 Beach was my favourite race…Ever. A newer but equally exciting version of the original race – Reach The Beach – will be hosted by Olympia on July 4th 2009. As one of the MUETRO events this epic race across the back roads, ATV trails and kilometres Manitoba sand is guaranteed to have it all. Team or solo, if you only do one local race this year Reach the Beach is your number one choice… and you do not even need a licence. Sweet!

I second that it's a rad race...can't wait!
ReplyDeleteI hope there are a billion people, all the super-fast types make an appearance, and the sun boils our brains and fries our skin off.
ReplyDeletethat would be swell...the best thing I rememeber about that race was Ian and I(did you?) racing our cross bikes w/700x32's the first yr--Lindsay didn't think we'd finish, I cracked the top ten and Ian made it too...a bunch of guys(FOG I think) showed up the second yr on cx's and I laughed...silly rabbits...
ReplyDeleteahhh memories
We did not call them 29ers back then, but I had drop bars on mine. When we hit the sand I stopped dead because of the narrow rubber. Then next year I put 700 x 42 on (which were the only and biggest rubbers on the market at the time). Now there are any number of truly mountain bike width options and I have moved on to a 26 x whatever, and you have chosen the big wheels.
ReplyDeleteAlthough, I can understand why they are removing the Bog Monster (who wants to wade through stinking rotting swam piss), it is-was one of the most unique aspectsof the race.
I may try to make it, but..
ReplyDeleteWill I need a car at the end to get me back? If so, I may have troubles with this one.
Darn, I thought I could use my Cxer.
ya us too-on the car front...
ReplyDeleteride your Cx bike Greg--just be prepared for snickering and a whole lotta suffering
We can probably organize something. There is room for 2 extra bikes on top and one or 2 could go in the car. I think we can get 4 extra stinky people in the car if we have too. We will make it work somehow.
ReplyDeletedibs!
ReplyDeleteOnly raced it once. Finished well! Rode trusty Mtb. Will this be suited to my Xc bike?
ReplyDeleteCross is not boss for RTB. Think sand, sand and more sand. Take your cx bike to GB and if you can ride end-to-end through the softest sand your good to go for the race. CX bikes are great on the gravel roads, mud pits and grassy fields, but sucka** in the sand. I would guestimate a minimum of a 700 X 42c is require to have any float at all, but you could walk-run all the sand sections you could not ride on the cx bike. A mountain bike will do the job however, so borrow-beg-steal from the shop... because if you only do one off road race this year in MB this is the one you don’t want to missed. Especially if you are a roadie.
