Top Ten (lame) Reasons For Not CycloCross Racing
1. I don’t know when the races are.
Cyclocross Races Now you do!
2. I don’t know where the races are.
Races are held in and around the sunny province of Manitoba, and including: Woodhaven Park, Civic Park, Wildwood, Omans Creek and many more. Contact race organizer for directions.
3. There isn’t a category for me.
Each race is subdivided into men’s, women’s, A (elites) and B (beginners and intermediate). There are frequently different times (e.g., 30 vs. 60 minutes) for beginners and more advanced riders. Everybody is welcome to participate regardless of age, ability or lack there of.
4. I don’t have a bike.
Don’t worry you don’t need to be Sven Nys to have fun. Many of the local bike shops will rent you everything you need. Most of your friends will have an old beater gathering dust in their garage. Goodwill sells the cheapest “10-speeds” on the planet (not recommended). Mountain bikes are welcome. Just remember to remove you barends.
5. I don’t know how to dismount and remount my bike.
Neither do I, but that never stopped me ;) You can join one of the local clubs, or come out and join a cross clinic. With a little encouragement you will be falling in the snow with the best of them ;) There are a number of excellent books and videos on the market that will help you cover some of the basics. Go to your local library. It's free!
6. The weather is raining/snowing/blowing etc.
Yea Whatever! When I was young I use to run naked in the snow up hill… Races are cancelled if the temperature dips too low or there is lightening, and if you dress intelligently you will stay warm and have lot of fun.
7. I don’t have a license.
You don’t need one to try a cross race. You can purchase a one-day licence for your first race to see if Cross really is Boss. Group rides and Cross Clinics are free. Join and club and you may receive a discount at each race. What more could you ask for?
8. It will ruin my off-season base training.
Yea Whatever! If you are really concerned about getting in the miles... ride to the race (like I do), race both B and A (like I do), and ride back (like I do!). Come out and suffer with all your friends.
9. It is too expensive.
Races are typically between $10 and $20 dollars. Car-pooling saves on gas money. Better yet, bike to the race and save the environment:)
10. The hills/climbs are too high.
You can do it. I know you can! Go Go Go :)
